Wollar Anglican Cemetery
Address: Barigan Road, Wollar 2850 NSW
Although there is a general cemetery at Wollar, St Luke's cemetery was used for most Protestant burials from the 1860s until recent times. The cemetery is now closed except to relatives of those already interred or who own grave sites.
Unfortunately, other than in respect of the graves closest to the church building, the cemetery site is sadly neglected. We found it overgrown with long grass and undergrowth that has sprung up within some of the grave enclosures and littered with fallen tree branches. Several of the older headstones have fallen and broken but there is no obvious evidence of vandalism.
Much of the data that appears on the inscription list, especially the unmarked burials, was generously provided by Lynne Robinson and Gai McDermott of Wollar who, since 1985, have been researching the families of the Wollar District. They have built an impressive archive that would be of interest to other researchers of those families. Lynne and Gai are willing to share their data or receive additional information and would welcome enquiries through this site.
Jean and I originally compiled this list from digital images and notes made in May 2002 and we updated it in May 2004. We also referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to death and funeral notices and obituaries published in the Mudgee Guardian & Gulgong Advertiser. Images of the inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.
How to find it
From Mudgee, take the Cassilis Road north for 9km to Budgee Budgee and turn right onto the Wollar Road. From that point, it is 40km to the village of Wollar. Drive through the village taking the right turn towards Muswellbrook and then, immediately across the creek, right again onto the Barigan Road. The church of St Luke and its cemetery will be seen on the rise to the left.
