Windeyer General Cemetery

Address: Windeyer Road, Windeyer 2850 NSW

This early cemetery has monuments dating from 1856, some of which are in remarkably good condition for their age. During its history, it has suffered through many years of neglect and even desecration when Chinese grave markers were vandalised during a gold-miners’ dispute in the early days. Two Chinese gravestones were saved and removed from the cemetery for their protection, eventually finding their way to the Windeyer caravan park. They were on display beside the reception area there for a number of years but have recently been placed in the Mudgee Museum. They are engraved with Chinese characters only.

Today, however, the cemetery is enjoying a new lease of life, having been cleaned up and maintained in good order by the Mid-Western Regional Council.

Jean and I originally made digital images and notes of every visible inscription in April 2002. These were updated on 4 June 2004. In compiling this list, we also referred to the NSW indexes of births, deaths and marriages and to the death and funeral announcements and obituaries published in the Mudgee Guardian and Gulgong Advertiser for additional information. Images of the inscriptions may be viewed and downloaded from the list of all inscriptions for this cemetery.

How to find it

Windeyer is an old gold mining centre in the Mudgee district. To reach it from Mudgee, travel via the Castlereagh Highway towards Gulgong for 4km and turn left onto the Hill End Road. After a further 17.4km, turn left at the Grattai CWA hall onto the Windeyer Road. From here it is 16km to the cemetery on the bank of the Meroo Creek, immediately across the bridge.
